Conversion Calculator

Why conversion calculator? Temperature, volume and weight conversions are usually quite frustrating things for me. Before we moved to the UK I only used metric units. But since our move I HAVE TO use pounds, ounces, cups, spoons,... You see what I mean?

For instance, I often need to convert US units to metric units when I am trying a new recipe from the internet or a cookbook. And this usually takes a lot of my time and effort. I have tried to make a list of most useful conversions in cooking and baking and included a conversion calculator which will help you convert all volume and weight units into your requested units straight away.

Calculate your own temperature conversions with the conversion calculator:

Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion

Enter Celsius
Value in Fahrenheit

Temperature conversions: CELSIUS (C) to FAHRENHEIT (F), GAS MARK and FAN OVEN

110C = 225F = gas mark 1/4 = fan oven 90C

130C = 266F = gas mark 1/2 = fan oven 110C

140C = 284F = gas mark 1 = fan oven 120C - Very cool

150C = 302F = gas mark 2 = fan oven 130C

160C = 320F = gas mark 3 = fan oven 140C

170C = 338F = gas mark 3 = fan oven 150C - Cool

180C = 356F = gas mark 4 = fan oven 160C - Warm

190C = 374F = gas mark 5 = fan oven 170C

200C = 392F = gas mark 6 = fan oven 180C - Moderate

220C = 428F = gas mark 7 = fan oven 200C - Fairly hot

230C = 450F = gas mark 8 = fan oven 210C - Hot

Good to know:

  • You should always check your cooker instruction book before cooking and baking

  • If you use fan assisted ovens than lower the original temperature of the oven from the recipe for 20 - 25 degrees Celsius or 50 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Ovens must be preheated to the specified temperature before cooking

Weight conversions:

GRAMS (g) to KILOGRAMS (kg)

10g = 0.01kg

50g = 0.05kg

Spoon measures (almost the same in America and Britain)- LIQUID:

Britain:

15 drops = 1 millilitre (ml)

1/4 teaspoon (tsp)= 1.25 millilitre (ml)

1/2 tsp = 2.5 ml

1 tsp = 5 ml

2 tsp = 10ml = 1 dessertspoon

3 tsp = 15ml = 1 tablespoon (tbsp)

1 tablespoon (tbsp) = 15 ml

America:

1/4 teaspoon (tsp) = 1.23 millilitre (ml)

1/2 tsp = 2.46 ml

3/4 tsp = 3.69 ml

1 tsp = 4.92 ml

1 1/2 tsp = 7.38 ml

2 tsp = 9.84 ml

3 tsp = 14.76 ml

1/2 tablespoon (tbsp) = 7.38 ml

1 tbsp = 14.7 ml

Spoon measures - solid:

A heaped tablespoon of caster sugar = 0.75 ounce (oz) = 21 grams (g)

A heaped tablespoon of flour = 1 ounce (oz) = 28 grams (g)

A heaped tablespoon of butter = 1.25 ounce (oz) = 35 grams (g)

A heaped tablespoon of sugar = 1 ounce (oz) = 28 grams (g)

*A  heaped or rounded tablespoon means with as much above the bowl of the spoon as in the spoon.

1 tablespoon (tbsp) of white flour = 11 grams

1 tbsp of caster sugar = 13 grams

The equivalent weights should be taken as approx. only, but they should be within 5 grams.

American LIQUID measures:

1/4 cup = 2 US fluid ounces (fl. oz) = 4 tablespoons (tbsp) = 59.4 millilitres (ml)

1/2 cup = 4 US fl. oz = 8 tbsp =  118 ml

3/4 cup = 6 US fl. oz = 12 tbsp = 178 ml

1 cup = 8 US fl. oz = 16 tbsp = 237 ml

1 1/2 cups = 12 US fl. oz = 24 tbsp = 355 ml

1 US pint = 473.176 ml

1/4 cup = 71.25 ml = 5 tbsp

1 pint = 568.26ml

1 fluid ounce = 28.41 ml

Good to know:

  • 1 British cup is 1.20095 times bigger than 1 American cup. To into American cups divide the figure in British cups by 1.20095.

  • To convert cup to tablespoon first convert cups into millilitres and than divide the figure in millilitres by 15.
