Recession

Why would I write about recession on a website about coffee and food?

First of all, it would perhaps be of help to make it clear what recession is: a state of economic restructuring. It is often a result of specific events that tip the economy over. A good example is the 1970s economic downturn caused by severe hikes in oil prices (source: my husband)

There is no doubt that we are in a serious recession right now and it is poised to last a few more years before turning the coin over. Thousand of people are loosing jobs and homes every day and  a significant proportion of the population is worrying how to survive recession. So, it is clear that life is not what it used to be only a couple of years ago.

Has this recession influenced our family life?

Sure, our daily life has become leaner (in terms of expenses) and that forces us all to think how to get through difficult times with least "damage".

The whole family has become "more creative" in spending our weekly budget. We spend more wisely than before this economic crisis and everybody has become more adaptable. This includes also our weekly visits in coffee shops and restaurants. Have you ever tried to calculate how much money you have spent there in a month? You would be surprised! I was actually shocked when I saw the numbers.

So, we decided to change our "old habits" and start looking for alternatives without losing the charm of socializing.

We decided:

  • to invite our friends and family from time to time for a coffee to our home (OK, OK, we won't give up visiting coffee shops and restaurants completely but this will be reduced)

  • to learn how to make hot coffee at home in various different (fun) ways

  • to learn different yummy coffee recipes

  • to more often bake and cook food at home

  • to learn how to bring brewing hot coffee at work to a cult status (this is actually my husband's plan because he works in the office)

  • to spend all leftovers of coffee and food for different purposes around our home

In addition:

  • one of the solutions to surviving recession is also: please start visiting your local market again, discover new ingredients, invent new dishes and start pulling together yummy recession recipes

  • organize yummy coffee and food parties in your home, in your garden, in your friend's garden (be creative)

I've made a lot of research recession-proof lifestyle and have come to a conclusion that we are actually very spoiled creatures. In my opinion this downturn is a great opportunity to transform our bad habits into something more positive and start appreciating small things again.

So, how to survive recession? Well, my plan is to make a humble contribution and show you how you can still enjoy coffee treats by making hot coffee at home and at work. But you can also join me with your ideas on how to survive recession and show other visitors of this website how you make yummy coffee and prepare your food to beat this "turbulent" times.
